Historical notes
DCCC Ab Urbe Condita,
that is, 8 centuries since the founding of Rome. We are on the eve of the first celebrations marking this anniversary.
It is 47 AD (some sources postpone the date to 48 AD) and Claudius is the emperor of Rome.
Claudius, to use a modern term, was the true outsider among the emperors who took turns on the throne of Rome.
Tradition has it that he was found by the Praetorians, hidden behind a curtain in the place where Caligula was assassinated. Trembling with fear, Claudius expected to be killed and instead was proclaimed Emperor.
Obviously, the reasons that led this “secondary” character of the Julio-Claudian family to the head of Rome are much more complex and articulated. But the fact remains that at 50 years old, this man, with a body weakened by a childhood illness, mocked and placed on the margins of political life, suddenly found himself Caesar of Rome.
Being one of the most erudite men of the era helped him greatly during his 14 years of rule.
His rule brought to Rome the annexation of new provinces such as Britannia, public works of enormous importance such as the completion of two aqueducts, the port of Ostia, and important administrative and legislative innovations.
