Rome - Covid19 - 2020
A suspended time... sudden, unreal.
A time thought to exist only in films with weak scripts or in narratives bordering on delirium and science fiction. But the human race is a species capable of adapting to anything.
Closed spaces become full and open spaces become empty. The houses welcome us, the squares are deserted.
All this emptiness fills me with a sense of anguish. I have trouble choosing what to photograph and what to ignore. It's not fear of an invisible enemy, but rather a strong unease at seeing a city I no longer recognize. Yes... Rome is deserted. Deserted but not abandoned. The constant checkpoints become an opportunity to chat with the police.
We share worries, hopes, and feelings.
I perceive a different reality than that portrayed by newspapers and television. The people respect the rules, and those charged with enforcing them predominantly favor a calm, conciliatory; humane approach.
There's a profound awareness that this is a difficult situation for everyone. Difficult even for the few colleagues I meet. It's instinctive to think of continuing those rare chats at the bar over a coffee.
But it's not possible. No bars are open. Everything is closed. Just as access to St. Peter's Square is closed on Good Friday.
Immersed in the darkness and silence of the night, a small, tired, holy man dressed in white embraces the cross as if to take upon himself all the weight and anguish of those days. It's a feeling I can't describe.
A feeling I'll never forget. But one thing is certain. The days will pass. Those lowered shutters will rise again, the empty churches will welcome us again, the desolate squares will once again be filled with the joy of living, the monuments will once again share their beauty, and the colonnade of St. Peter's will embrace everyone.
Those days will return.
We will relive our ordinary days once again.
