DCCC Ab Urbe Condita,
8 centuries since the founding of Rome.
We are on the eve of the first celebrations commemorating this anniversary.
It is 47 AD (some sources postpone the date to 48 AD), and Claudius is the emperor of Rome.
Claudius, to use a modern term, was the true outsider among the emperors who alternated on the throne of Rome. Tradition has it that he was found by the Praetorians, hiding behind a curtain at the site where Caligula was assassinated. Trembling with fear, Claudius expected to be killed, but instead was proclaimed Emperor. Obviously, the reasons that brought this "secondary" figure of the Julio-Claudian family to the head of Rome are much more complex and nuanced.
At 50 years old, this man, physically weakened by a youthful illness, derided and marginalized from political life, suddenly found himself Caesar of Rome. Being one of the most erudite men of the time served him well during his 14-year reign.
This government brought to Rome the annexation of new provinces such as Britannia, enormously important public works such as the completion of two aqueducts, the port of Ostia, and important administrative and legislative innovations.
